Cynthia paced the hardwood floor, holding her late-afternoon cup of tea in her hand. “Anna, it was like something off of one of those sappy movies you like to tease me about.”

“What are you talking about? Slow down. I want details.” Anna sat at the dining table in the eat-in kitchen. “Did he kiss you?”

Cynthia retrieved a mug from the cabinet to pour Anna a cup. “I thought you wanted details, not go straight to the good stuff.”

“How about you work backwards. Start with the juicy stuff then get to the details.”

She poured hot water over a tea bag and the fresh spicy aroma wafted from the water. “You’re impossible.”

“That’s why you love me.” Anna batted her eyelashes.

Cynthia placed the cup on the table. “You know that look only works on men.”

“Don’t be so sure. It’s worked on women, too.” Anna sipped her tea, her long, dark lashes dipping below the rim of the cup. “So I’ve been told. Now, spill it.”

Excitement shot through her veins at the memory of Mitch’s strong hands on her skin. “Okay, on the way to the banquet he asked me if I thought he should start dating. That Liam has been after him for a while to move on with his life. That’s when I noticed his wedding ring was on his right hand. He’s never moved it from his left hand until yesterday.”

“So he kissed you?”

Cynthia sighed. “Do you want me to tell you the entire story or not?”

“Fine. I’ll be quiet through the boring details. Go ahead.”

Cynthia sat across from her and set her mug on the table, still cupping it so the heat would keep her calm. “Anyway, he said he needed to practice dating. As if that was why he’d asked me to the banquet.”

“What a jerk. Okay, I change my mind. It’s time for you to move on and give up on that creep.”

“Let me finish. It turns out he wasn’t practicing. I was his date. At least, I think I was.”

“Because he kissed you?” Anna sat forward with both elbows on the table.

“No. He followed me outside after his speech and put his hands on my arms.” She stroked her sleeve, where his touch had burned a sense of longing into her. “He told me that it was me he wanted to date.”

“He said that?” Anna’s eyebrows rose, her attention fully on the story now.

“Yes...well, I think he did. It was definitely implied, though. He said all the things he thanked me for in his speech were professional, but there was more. I’d helped him through a dark time. He loves seeing me with Andy, and he wants to talk about us.”

“Then what?” Anna asked.

“Isn’t that enough? I mean, all this time I didn’t even know if he cared about me as more than just the woman that brought him coffee.” Her heart did that skipping routine it had practiced all night in her chest.

Anna stood, her chair scraping against the hardwood floor. “It’s plenty.”

Cynthia felt like her body lifted from the ground.
