Cynthia paced the hardwood floor, holding her late-afternoon cup of tea in her hand. âAnna, it was like something off of one of those sappy movies you like to tease me about.â
âWhat are you talking about? Slow down. I want details.â Anna sat at the dining table in the eat-in kitchen. âDid he kiss you?â
Cynthia retrieved a mug from the cabinet to pour Anna a cup. âI thought you wanted details, not go straight to the good stuff.â
âHow about you work backwards. Start with the juicy stuff then get to the details.â
She poured hot water over a tea bag and the fresh spicy aroma wafted from the water. âYouâre impossible.â
âThatâs why you love me.â Anna batted her eyelashes.
Cynthia placed the cup on the table. âYou know that look only works on men.â
âDonât be so sure. Itâs worked on women, too.â Anna sipped her tea, her long, dark lashes dipping below the rim of the cup. âSo Iâve been told. Now, spill it.â
Excitement shot through her veins at the memory of Mitchâs strong hands on her skin. âOkay, on the way to the banquet he asked me if I thought he should start dating. That Liam has been after him for a while to move on with his life. Thatâs when I noticed his wedding ring was on his right hand. Heâs never moved it from his left hand until yesterday.â
âSo he kissed you?â
Cynthia sighed. âDo you want me to tell you the entire story or not?â
âFine. Iâll be quiet through the boring details. Go ahead.â
Cynthia sat across from her and set her mug on the table, still cupping it so the heat would keep her calm. âAnyway, he said he needed to practice dating. As if that was why heâd asked me to the banquet.â
âWhat a jerk. Okay, I change my mind. Itâs time for you to move on and give up on that creep.â
âLet me finish. It turns out he wasnât practicing. I was his date. At least, I think I was.â
âBecause he kissed you?â Anna sat forward with both elbows on the table.
âNo. He followed me outside after his speech and put his hands on my arms.â She stroked her sleeve, where his touch had burned a sense of longing into her. âHe told me that it was me he wanted to date.â
âHe said that?â Annaâs eyebrows rose, her attention fully on the story now.
âYes...well, I think he did. It was definitely implied, though. He said all the things he thanked me for in his speech were professional, but there was more. Iâd helped him through a dark time. He loves seeing me with Andy, and he wants to talk about us.â
âThen what?â Anna asked.
âIsnât that enough? I mean, all this time I didnât even know if he cared about me as more than just the woman that brought him coffee.â Her heart did that skipping routine it had practiced all night in her chest.
Anna stood, her chair scraping against the hardwood floor. âItâs plenty.â
Cynthia felt like her body lifted from the ground.
